One of the first meals that we cooked together as a couple was a garlic butter steak. It is simple and quick to make. I think we made the steak plus the few sides that we had in under an hour. Not bad, eh? Well, here’s the menu:
Garlic Butter Steak + Steamed Green Beans and Carrots + Fried Bananas (plantains) + Bread with Olive spread
The fried bananas may surprise many of you, but we swear, the sweetness of the bananas with the garlic-y salty flavor of the steak rub made a very delicious combination. You guys must try it!. 🙂
In our pantry, we already had butter, garlic, spices, and olive spread. The main things we bought at the store were the ‘fresh’ items: steak, veggies, bananas, and bread.
1. Garlic Steak
Things You Need:
Steak (Any cut is fine, we used NY strip steak)
Salt & Pepper
Lawry’s Salt (optional)
What To Do:
Pat the steak dry and remove the fatty areas. Then sprinkle in salt and pepper to both sides of the steak. We also added the Lawry’s salt onto both sides for flavor.
Grab around 2-3 garlic cloves and slice them into thin slices. Put it in a microwave safe bowl along with 2 tbsp of butter. Stick it in a microwave and melt the butter.To make it a little interesting, we also sprinkled some rosemary into the sauce. This is totally optional, of course. 🙂
Next, put the garlic butter sauce into a very hot pan. Then put the steak in the pan. Cook first side for 2-3 minutes. Then flip the steak to the other side and cook for 1-2 minutes. Finally, put the steak, and what’s left of the garlic sauce into a 350 degree oven (5 minutes for medium rare-medium).
the steak out and let it rest for 2-3 minutes before slicing the steak.
2. Fried Bananas
What You Need:

What to Do:
Slice the bananas like pictured below. Then in a hot pan, melt in butter, brown sugar, and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Once the mixture has a somewhat ‘caramel’-y consistency, put in the sliced bananas and fry until golden brown.
3. Extra Sides
We used green beans and sliced carrots to steam.
We also bought a small mini baguette of sour dough roll from La Brea Bakery and sliced it up. Then we spread a bit of butter on them and topped them off with a jar of olive spread bought from the Farmer’s Market on 3rd street. We topped that off with a sprinkle of olive oil and warmed them up in the oven. Yummy!
Final Product! Plate all the above onto a nice plate and enjoy! Beautiful!
